What is UPSC Engineering Services (IES)

UPSC Engineering Services (IES)

Indian Engineering Services remain the most sought-after careers for the engineering graduates in India. An all India level competitive examination, called Engineering Services Examination (ESE) is conducted every year by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) for recruitment to the Indian Engineering Services. The examination constitutes a written examination (five tests) and followed by an Interview. ESE is considered as one of the toughest examination in India due to the difficulty related to the examination and the selection procedure. Also there are less number of posts and more number of aspirants. Based on 2010 statistics, a total of 1,57,649 candidates applied for a total of 434 Vacancies in all branches and cadres, having competition ratio of 1:363.

The candidates who get selected for IES, enjoy a very high respect and stature in the society. Candidates who are selected for IES are appointed as Assistant Executive Engineers in various departments under central government for Group A and Group B posts. The various services in which recruitment is made through ESE include Indian Railways, Central Engineering, Central Water engineering, Border roads Engineering, Indian Defence service of Engineers, Indian ordinance Factories, Central power engineering, Indian Naval armament service, Central Electrical & Mechanical Engineering, Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering, Indian Telecommunication service, Wireless planning & Coordination wing etc..

ESE 2014 : An Overview

  1. Notification Date: 15.03.2014
  2. Date of examination: From 20.06.2014 (Three Days)
  3. Engineering Branches which are eligible:
    • i Civil Engineering
    • ii Mechanical Engineering
    • iii Electrical Engineering
    • iv Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering
  4. Age Limit: 21 to 30 years
    (However certain categories of persons (SC, ST & OBC) and certain departmental candidates are eligible for age relaxation).
  5. Educational qualifications:
    A degree in Engineering from a recognized university or equivalent. MSc degree or its equivalent with Wireless Communications, Electronics, Radio Physics or Radio Engineering as special subjects are also eligible. Candidates appearing examination of their final year engineering degree or equivalent are also eligible.

Scheme of Examination

Paper-I (Objective Type) General Ability Test: (Part A: General English I Part B: General Studies) 200 Marks
Paper-II & III (Objective Type) In the respective Engineering Branch (CE/ME/EE/E&T) 200 Marks for each Paper
Paper-IV & V (Conventional Type) In the respective Engineering Branch (CE/ME/EE/E&T) 200 Marks for each Paper
Total Marks for written examination 1000 Marks
Personality Test (Interview) 200 Marks

Standard of the Exam:
The standard of paper in General Ability Test will be such as may be expected of an Engineering graduate. The standard of the papers in other subjects will approximately be that of an Engineering Degree examination of an Indian University. Both objective and conventional type papers cover the entire syllabus of the relevant engineering disciplines.

Cut off marks for ESE-2012

The candidate should secure minimum qualifying marks in each paper and also in aggregate of the three objective papers.The total marks of the last candidate finally selected for appointment are given below.

In view of the mammoth syllabus content and tough competition in IES, only a few candidates can get good ranks in their very first attempt.
