UPSC Engineering Services (IES)Indian Engineering Services remain the most sought-after careers for the engineering graduates in India. An all India level competitive examination, called Engineering Services Examination (ESE) is conducted every year by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) for recruitment to the Indian Engineering Services. The examination constitutes a written examination (five tests) and followed by an Interview. ESE is considered as one of the toughest examination in India due to the difficulty related to the examination and the selection procedure. Also there are less number of posts and more number of aspirants. Based on 2010 statistics, a total of 1,57,649 candidates applied for a total of 434 Vacancies in all branches and cadres, having competition ratio of 1:363.

Candidates who are selected for IES are appointed as Assistant Executive Engineers in various departments under central government for Group A and Group B posts. Age Limit: 21 to 30 years
(However certain categories of persons (SC, ST & OBC) and certain departmental candidates are eligible for age relaxation).
A degree in Engineering from a recognized university or equivalent. MSc degree or its equivalent with Wireless Communications, Electronics, Radio Physics or Radio Engineering as special subjects are also eligible. Candidates appearing examination of their final year engineering degree or equivalent are also eligible.

Standard of the Exam:
The standard of paper in General Ability Test will be such as may be expected of an Engineering graduate. The standard of the papers in other subjects will approximately be that of an Engineering Degree examination of an Indian University. Both objective and conventional type papers cover the entire syllabus of the relevant engineering disciplines.
