UPSC Indian Railway Management Service (IRMS)
The Government of India has chosen to merge each of the eight existing administrations of Indian Railways at all levels i.e., from Junior Scale to HAG + into a solitary Indian Railways Management Service (IRMS)
The UPSC test for the New Indian Railway Management Service (IRMS) will be conducted first in 2023. So far officials for the Indian Railway Accounts Service, Indian Railway Traffic Service, Indian Railway and the Indian Railway Personnel Service were selected through the Civil Services Exam (CSE), while those for the other building administrations were enlisted through the Indian Engineering Service (IES) test.
IRMS will join all the current Railway Services selected through the Civil Services Examination (CSE) and Indian Engineering Services (ESE/IES) to be directed by UPSC.

- Indian Railway Service of Mechanical Engineers
- Indian Railway Service of Electrical Engineers Indian Railway Service of Signal Engineers
From 2023, However, there might be a common preliminary exam for the railway service but the main exam for engineers might be on their specialized domain expertise and not general studies.

Degree in Engineering / Degree in Commerce/ Chartered Accountancy, from a University incorporated by an Act of the Central or State Legislature in India or other Educational Institutes established by an Act of Parliament or declared to be deemed as University under Section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956.
The IRMSE will be a two-tier examination- a Preliminary Screening Examination, followed by a Main Written Examination and Interview.

PRELIMINARY EXAMINATION:
The Examination shall comprise of two compulsory Papers of 200 marks each.
Note:
- Both the question papers will be of the objective type (multiple choice questions) and each will be two hours in duration.
- The General Studies Paper-II of the Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination will be a qualifying paper with minimum qualifying marks fixed at 33%.
- The question papers will be set both in Hindi and English.
IRMS Mains Exam Pattern 2023
(i) Qualifying Papers
Paper A– One of the Indian Languages to be selected by the candidate from the Languages included in the Eighth Schedule to the Constitution. for 300 marks
Paper B – English for 300 marks
(ii) Papers to be counted for merit
Optional Subject ‐ Paper – 250 marks
Optional Subject ‐ Paper 2 – 250 marks
(iii) Personality Test – 100 marks
List of optional subjects from which a candidate is to choose only one optional subject
- Civil Engineering,
- Mechanical Engineering
- Electrical Engineering
- Commerce and Accountancy.
The syllabi for the aforesaid qualifying papers and optional subjects will be same as those for the Civil Services Examination (CSE).

The common candidates of Civil Services (Main) Examination and IRMS (Main) Examination may opt for any of the optional subjects.
Candidates can choose the same optional subjects or the different subjects as per their interest.
The exam language for the qualifying papers and optional subjects (for question papers and writing answers) will be same for the CSE (Main) and IRMS Examination
The vacancies for IRMSE (150 No’s) conducting by UPSC will consist of following from the four branches:
- Civil (30)
- Mechanical (30)
- Electrical (60) and
- Commerce & Accountancy (30).
